Location: North Western New York area or candidates willing to relocate is highly preferred; open to remote candidates within EST or CST time zones 

Role Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Software Engineer with strong solutions design architecture experience and problem-solving skills to support a  modernizing mainframe environment involving multiple consumer lending applications. This role will be hands-on, covering the full lifecycle from design through delivery, and will require both high-level strategic thinking and technical expertise.

Project Scope:
This modernization initiative includes transitioning legacy mainframe systems to distributed environments and implementing new toolsets like Gitlab, SonarQube, automated testing, and Ansible. The team will focus on pipeline setup, cloud distribution, and further innovative technologies as the project evolves.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Hands-on COBOL programming 
2. End-to-end solution architecture and design
3. Collaborate closely with business analysts to translate business requirements into technical solutions, breaking down complex processes and ensuring functional alignment.
4. Solve complex problems with innovative, out-of-the-box solutions to modernize legacy systems and improve efficiency.
5. Build strong partnerships across teams, ensuring clear communication, organization, and alignment throughout project phases.

Must-Have Requirements:

• Mainframe/COBOL experience
• Familiarity with legacy tools and processes, including Xpediter, TSO, and Abend-aid.
• Solution Architecture & Design
• Banking/Consumer Lending Background
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to dive into details, think big-picture, and provide code-centric solutions.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications:

• Experience with IBM’s modern z development platforms (IDz, zDIH, ADDI, DBB, z/OS Connect).
• Familiarity with distributed systems, DevOps tools, and practices, including Gitlab, Sonar, automated testing, and Ansible.
• Experience with the Shaw application (used for loans and lines of credit) and Hogan system.
