Job Summary:
We’re looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead our banking client’s API development team on a large payments conversion. We need someone who will roll up their sleeves, drive delivery, and rally engineers to push through roadblocks. This role requires someone direct, accountable, and technically strong enough to know when things aren’t up to standard—and fix them.
You’ll oversee end-to-end API development and integrations, ensuring work gets done efficiently while providing clear updates to leadership. Think of this role as a blend of team lead and manager: part motivator, part enforcer, and part contributor.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the API development team, ensuring projects are executed on time and to standard.
- Provide hands-on support in API development (Java Spring Boot), stepping in to code, review, or troubleshoot as needed.
- Act as the go-to escalation point, handling blockers, resolving issues, and keeping the team accountable.
- Oversee performance management, feedback, and coaching for engineers.
- Partner with leadership to provide regular project updates, risks, and progress reports.
- Ensure APIs are designed, built, and delivered with quality, security, and scalability in mind.
- Drive direct communication within the team—calling out roadblocks, excuses, and inefficiencies.
- Support application development and integration projects, ensuring alignment with established architecture.
- Help the team pivot quickly and ship APIs, focusing on execution over endless design discussions.
- Work with business partners to ensure deliverables meet requirements, without overhauling existing architecture.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in API development and integration with Java Spring Boot.
- Strong technical background—able to step in, code, and validate technical work.
- Experience leading engineering teams (team lead or manager capacity), with a track record of driving results.
- Direct and transparent communication style; able to motivate and hold teams accountable.
- Ability to balance management responsibilities with hands-on technical contribution.
- Banking experience
- Strong problem-solving skills with a pragmatic, execution-first mindset.
Nice to Have
- Experience with financial services, payments, or debit card platforms (Fiserv).
